This auto-new-doc behavior is an astoundingly unpopular default. Has
anyone filed it as a bug?
I'm pretty sure I did, back when I was at Apple. But that was a long
time ago now. A fresh wave of bugs would probably be a good thing, just
to keep Apple on their toes. :->
I'll refrain from giving further opinions on the subject, since this
isn't really the appropriate forum...
