Need help with NSOutlineView

I can't find any satisfactory documentation for NSOutlineView. I'm confused about what "item" represents exactly. When I made a small testing program to discover what each of these items represented, I wasn't enlightened.

Basically, I'm trying to represent an array which may subarrays in an NSOutlineView (the main expandable item in the view would be the main array, each sub expandable item would be a contained array, etc.).
