I don't think that security issues are the reason for keeping the API
private. Otherwise it wouldn't be possible to do things like:

grep "^To:" ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Sent\ Messages.mbox/mbox

Having an entire mbox file accessible is an even bigger security risk, since
it allows a virus to retrieve not only email addresses but meaningful
subjects as well.
