all i do is make sure the background is transparent, when i create a new
image in photoshop, (it shows as a checkerboard),
then i design the icon, then use the oddly placed "Help->Export
Transparent Image" menu item... leave it as "My image is on a
transparent background", click next, leave it as used for "Print", hit
next, then save it as a PNG. it works for me, ymmv.

I'm in the same boat. There's even a help assistant to export
transparent images in Photoshop because this is such a common
request that is otherwise not self evident. Unfortunately,
it doesn't do the right think for Cocoa. I'm sure it's simple
once you know the secret, but for the uninitiated the documentation
appears to be obtuse.
Can anyone offer a simple procedure to create TIFF images
with transparency in Photoshop to work with NSImage?
Is there another tool I should use? I searched for "ToyViewer" and
ran into a dead end (server not found).
