I have seen in the Apple's cocoa dev list that it is possible to change
the MAC address of the ethernet card.
Thus it cannot be ensured as globally unique.
IMHO, it is only required to be unique on a LAN ( or to be more precise,
among all the computers that can be reached directly by the same router).
Over the Internet, you can have 2 computers with the same MAC address,
if they are separated by at least 2 routers.

To redux:
* Several people sent me mail saying that different versions of Mac hardware
put their serial number in different places. Apple System Profiler knows
where to look. I don't.
* I was interested in doing this for uniquification, not for copy
protection. Several people suggested that I use ethernet Mac address, which
is supposed to be unique. I'm actually using a code made up from the time
and random().
* However, I should probably start thinking about copyright issues. Is there
a good shareware registration service available for OSX programs?
