Whoops. I evidently freaked some people, if my inbox is any indication.
For those that care, a quick explanation.
Apple has hired a new person to run lists.apple.com, Kevin. He's at
email@hidden. I haven't left Apple. Instead, we've split the
work I was doing into pieces, and kevin is focusing on the lists box full
time, and I've slid sideways to go work on "other stuff". So Kevin's in
charge now, and I'm building a neat new toy I can't talk about, but I'm
still working with Kevin on things like the next round of upgrades for the
server here and helping out as he gets fully up to speed (and briefing him
on which of you folks he needs to keep a close eye on.....)
Sorry to stop on the mac.com announcement so hard, but -- while I have no
problem of people talking about alternatives if that's what people feel they
need, this is not the place to get into fights or have rants about what was
announced today. If you want to rant and complain, use the .mac/mac.com
forums. (me, personally, taking off any vestige of "apple" or "list mom" hat
I might be wearing, thinks that spending the cost of two trips to Mcdonalds
a month to make sure the service gets enough funding that it isn't shut down
(like all of those other dot-com free systems that USED to exist. Remember
those?) and to avoid all those wonderful pop-up adds geocities and tripod
and the remaining few 'free' system shove on your stuff (have you subscribed
to a yahoogroups email list recently?) is a great bargain. But if "free" is
more important than "usable", then you'll need to find a new service, I
guess. Okay, putting the apple and list mom hats again....)
So if you want to talk about alternatives, fine. If you want to rant or
complain about the decision, that doesn't belong here.... (and the reason
I'm using my non-apple address is simple. First, to make sure it's clear I'm
NOT the list mom, and second, now that I'm 'just' an interested subscriber
to the list, I have the mail sent to me at home. I'd actually like to learn
cocoa programming some day. With Kevin on board, I might have enough free
time to actually start. Hope that clears everything up...)
