Yes, that's just silly on the face of it, if you've ever seen an
EMACS user go after it.
It's a variation of the old "Easy to Learn" versus "Easy to Use"
debate. The experts would argue that beginners just needed to invest
the time to master the arcane key sequences. The best evidence
suggests that this is not true.
That's a matter of interpreting the evidence, and I think the many zippy
EMACS users prove that it is true. If you master the arcane key
sequences, you will be faster.
The key issue is many people do not *want* to learn the keystrokes and
will fumble-futz at the same interface for years rather than make an
investment in actually learning the key commands.
People who advocate "keyboard is better" on the grounds that its faster
are overlooking this key fact. A few easily learned shortcuts are great,
but most average users don't want to make a really big learning
investment in a tool. Even lots of professionals will balk at it unless
they are really "living" in that program from dawn to dusk. And you
certainly can live in EMACS.
