For me - this is very much on topic. I have just started developing cocoa apps. I love it and am a huge advocate. However, I have widely promoted my first application with links to my homepage site and I have been using my mac.com email in all my correspondence. I don't know where to start in terms of moving my software on to another site - its looking so difficult (how do I re-create the publicity, let my users know of the new url?) that I'm considering paying for a .mac account. However - recently I had my iTools account temporarily suspended because there was too much traffic to my site - will the new non-free .mac account suffer from these same restrictions? Who knows?

The new bandwidth limiting is about the same as the old. About 2-6 times the space of your iDisk dependent on the number of downloads in a six hour period. It's closer to 6x for small files.

This is a place that Apple is failing badly. they're IN the server service business, but don't operate in the appropriate mode for it (that is, I pay XX dollars for XX mega of transfer). Instead it's this complicated formula.

One solution to this is to get your apps included in the Software portion of the iDisk that is shared amongst users.. true, its not trivial, but it is possible.

Ultimately, bandwidth costs money. And I seriously can't see how it can be made cheaper that Apple is trying now. For example.. I pay $130/month for 1Gb of transfer per day, and a gig of disk space through pair networks.. if I go over, I pay more..

Pair's most basic account is 9.95 per month.. 100mb of traffic, 100Mb of disk space, 10 mailboxes and telnet/ssh access... same price as .Mac more or less. From what I've been told on the .Mac side, it seems that .Mac offers more bandwidth, but less straightforward calculation.

The new Backup software (which is very cool BTW.. i wish it worked with generic webdav though, so I could just keep all my machines synced here), homepage, all the other good stuff.. This is a place where James or others could kick in..

Oh.. and New Mac buyers should get .Mac for free, as a perk.
