IIRC, it used to be done in OpenStep by some menu command (which I've never used myself, so don't remember its name).

Hey Ondra, and I thought you were an ooooold NeXTSTEP adept ;-)
It was "Arrange Windows" with Cmd-Shift-A as shortcut and I loved it!
