Just to provide some sort of closure on this question:
I have corresponded offlist with Antonio and it turned out that he had an older version of the Developer Tools installed and he didn't realize that in that version, gcc had been renamed as 'cc'. (Current versions have cc as a symbolic link to gcc but that version had only the one file /usr/bin/cc which was actually a renamed gcc 2.95.2)
