Might be the cause of problems. *I AM NOT THAT SURE* since I always went the nice NSThread way myself, but so far as I recall, I'm afraid Cocoa is not that compatible with plain pthreads (the NSThread layer does some extra things, like switching the message sending itself to be mt-safe and more).
