Objective-C Specification

  • Subject: Objective-C Specification

Hello all,

I have observed that all three major books (2 oreilly, one Hillegass) on
Cocoa programming cram the language Objective-C in. While this makes sense
right now, I do wish I could find an Obj-C language book separate from the
Cocoa API and Apple's documentation (which is more about OO than the
specifics of Obj-C the way I see it). The books at Amazon.com that I found
seem to be 10-12 years old and deal with NextStep programming. Anyhow, I
also have the following questions:

1. Is there an ISO and/or ANSI standard for Objectiv-C?
2. Where are the exact specifications for the language (the likes of which
could be used to write a compiler, not that I intend to).

I am a bit unsure about how many assumptions I can make about its
inheritance from standard C, and I have some other things I'd like to sort
out with the specs. I also want to know if Apple has taken liberties with
the language since I bet they have had the most influence on recent compiler
work for the language. Will Obj-C be a language with its only niche in Mac
OS X programming?

Thanks you in advance for any responses.

-Josh Aas
