DirectDisplay problem?

Hi,
I'm getting a strage problem using DirectDisplay to fade in/out gamma. I
never had the problem before, but now for some strange reason, the
fading is much slower (10x+) and not only that, but during the fading a
weird circle is displayed. It's distorted and it looks like OS X's
rainbow disc ainimation. Has anyone experienced this? I think the 10.1.5
update may have caused something, but other people with the same OS
version are not getting this. The code is here (written by Jeff Binder):

Jeff is not having this problem with his set up and suggests that maybe
something running in the background is slowing it down. So here's the
'top' screenshot in the terminal:

I don't see anything that may be slowing it down. I have no clue what's
causing this!
Thanks for the help.
-Yuki
