Imho, over-protecting a software is often bad to get people to buy.
Of course, piracy is a problem, but on the other hand it can also have good
side effects: Just think about students who use pirated software that they
would never afford to buy. Five years later, when their boss asks them
"which software do you need ?", what will they choose ? A "badly protected"
product they have been using for years, or an overprotected software they
have never been able to try ?

I do subscribe to that point of view. Protect your software just enough to
prevent "easy piracy", but don't spend too much time on this unless you're
absolutely sure that it is necessary.
At a certain point, you would lose your time (and thus your money) and many
potential future users (and thus your money again).
