NSUserDefaults will work. The documentation is out of date.

Although, to be fair, the documentation does stress that PreferencePanes.framework is responsible only for displaying user preferences, and points out that a number of different mechanisms can be used to store and retrieve them. It simply hasn't been updated to include NSUserDefaults as one of the available storage options.
