How about the ability to automatically switch the keyboard layout when a
user chooses the Symbol font? Surely something like this must be possible?
It could maybe be implemented by checking to see if a font doesn't have
any characters typed by the current keyboard layout, and if so to switch
to the layout in which the key typed is valid...
Nope. You say (through used keyboard layout, or Imput Management) which
characters you want to enter. Again, this has *NOTHING* repeat *NOTHING*
repeat *NOTHING* to do with any font. You might do that in application
which actually does not use fonts at all; you might do that in application
which uses more fonts at once (like, you type into more panes each of
which uses different style), etc, etc.
Only when the character is about to be displayed -- which might be, as
said before, *very* independent on its instertion -- the display system
selects the font to be used. Again that is pretty complicated, since not
all fonts can display all characters. Incidentally, so far as there is
just one Symbol font which covers characters which are not in any other
font (is it true? I'm not sure), it is superfluous to show it in Font
Panel at all: so far as font is the only selection for appropriate
characters, there's no reason at all to present its name to user.
