An idea I had for dealing with this is that the application would just
select the proper localized RTF file from inside its bundle, message the
Finder to open that file in the preferred app for RTF (probably
TextEdit), and then quit. It would suppress its dock icon display,
would have no menu bar, etc. -- entirely faceless. So from the user's
point of view, they would have double-clicked on the "about" file (it
could even have an RTF document icon, if I wanted to really try to
conceal what was going on, but I'm not sure that's appropriate), and
TextEdit would have magically chosen the right language to display.

I for one think that's a great idea. It would only take two lines of code: one to find the localized readme file in the bundle, and one to display the file using launch services. This is a showcase for the power of bundles, and can only add to the "Mac Experience."

(thinking aloud) This ReadMe app could have the same icon as the main app, but with the addition of some standard, universal "About" or "ReadMe" bagde, so that the user immediatly recognizes the icon as "aha, this is the ReadMe for app Foo". Convenient if the two get separated, like keeping a separate folder of ReadMe's for installed apps - just naming it "Foo ReadMe" may not be obvious to non-english speaking users.

Hm. From now on, if I come across an app with an additional ReadMe folder full of English.rtf, Norsk.rtf, Deutsch.rtf etc. I will think "Goodness me, how clunky." :-)

Go for it Ben!

I.
