OpenGL GLUT & GLUI problems

I'm trying to use GLUI (see http://www.cs.unc.edu/~rademach/glui/) to port a Unix/Windows program, but I have a lot of problem with Mac OS X's implementation of GLUT. In particular glutCreateWindow() and glutCreateSubWindow() crash badly. This is not very surprising for the first one, and can be circumvented easily, but why is it so for the second one? It is just supposed to map an area of the current OpenGL view in a fictitious subwindow.

Any advice welcome!
