Preventing application icon from appearing in the dock

I am a novice at Cocoa programming. I searched the archives, but I could
not find this subject posted.

Is there a way to prevent an application's icon from appearing in the dock?
I have a simple application that displays an NSRunAlertPanel to get the
user's selection, then executes some Cocoa code and quits (it may display
an error alert before it quits). It would be nice to be able to launch it
from an installer and possibly another running application without the user
seeing its icon appearing and bouncing in the dock. Is there a way to do
this?

Thanks in advance.
