Another nice feature would be to have east and west oriented tabs, but with the option to have tab text laid out horizontally, like this (excuse Q&D ASCII art)...

+-------------------+
| |
| |-----------.
| | Tab 1 |
| |-----------'
| +-----------.
| | Other Tab |
| +-----------'
| |
+-------------------+

Apple uses this idea on its HomePage iTools service. You can fit a lot more tabs onto the view, and the text is much more readable. Good for kiosks or custom enterprise apps where all paths need to be visible at once.
