This probably is not what you wanted but you should at least checkout
NSStatusBar and NSStatusItem. According to the docs, a StatusBar is the
same type of menu as the volume control and Resolution switcher. I found
them by accident when looking for NSProgressMeter. I have not used them.
It might be what you are looking for.

The API's to do this are private. Apple is apparently afraid of the menu
bar becoming as abused as it was in OS 9 with lots of apps sticking crap
up there and cluttering it up.
Some third-party menu extras have been made, though, so apparently
someone's cracked the API. You might want to ask one of the authors of
the shareware menu extras.

hi,
is there any API to get one's app icon to show up in the Apple menu
top right corner, next to the volume control and date/time icons?
apparently one could do this on MacOS 9, but i haven't used that OS,
so don't know the API.
i've seen docklings, but those show up in the Dock, which is not what
i had in mind.
thanks for any info.
