Custom StatusItem

I'm trying to create a custom view to use in place of the NSStatusItem using the - (void)setView message. I am wondering how I should draw the view when it is highlighted, i.e. when the mouse button is being held down. How do I draw it so that the highlighted area allows the aqua background to show though?
