Is there a standard key equivalent for the preferences in the
application menu?

A lot of applications use command + semicolon, but I'd warn against that since a lot of non-English keyboards have the semicolon as a secondary key, usually secondary to the comma, in which case that key combination would be more naturally expressed as shift + command + comma. My personal aesthetics would suggest having *no* key equivalent, but if you're determined, iTunes uses command + Y which might be a better choice.
