Talking to storage devices...

Hi, can someone answer if there is possible do talk to hardware storage devices through cocoa. Like via an API, like OpenTransport for Networking. I want to make my app to tell me if there is a mounted non-prepared cd-r in my CD-RW. Or do i have to use low-level I/O kit through C++.

Im new to this low-level stuff. So please spare me the flaming.
