The problem as I see it with the SQL options are that their are either

FrontBase has an Obj-C API that has been release quality for a couple of

FrontBase is SQL-92 compliant, passes the ACID test, and also has APIs
for REALbasic, PHP, WebObjects, Tcl etc.
It's very robust, and scalable -- at WWDC a database was demonstrated
with 1 billion (1,000,000,000) rows. On the basis of a serious
comparative evaluation, some customers have chosen FrontBase over Oracle.
It's also used as an embedded database in Salon Transcripts (you may
recall was runner up in the Apple Design Awards) and Diamondsoft's new
release of Font Reserve, and is bundled with two of Baseview's products.
