To all who have replied to me about my question,

No, I don't need the extra retains. They were remnants of mutating code.

Yes, the data needs to stick around even after the sound has been created because the project is a sound editor, which is also why it needs to be mutable.

After trying my same code on other AIFF files, it worked, so I guess the format of the files I was trying before is hosed. So I've been going crazy for no reason at all. Dontcha hate that? :)

So, thanks for all the suggestions.
