I would suggest that it was not the removal of Obj-C support per se that "nearly killed it", but rather how the transition was handled (both by Apple, and by some customers).

My understanding is that more copies of WebObjects are now being sold than ever before.

That said, despite the Java thing and other problems, it's still the best one available, though the edge is not as great as it used to be.

On the contrary, the move to pure Java has opened up a wide range of options that would have otherwise been closed to the product, and the feature set has steadily increased. I expect this to continue, with some particularly interesting developments in the not-too-distant future.

Go for it -- you won't regret.
