I thought I would share my shareware "marketing" experience in case anyone else wanted some numbers to set expectations with. I've enjoyed it in the past when people shared such info. On the whole, I've been very pleased with the results based on the time I spent marketing (about an hour of cut/paste emailing). I am a hobbyist developer.

I released a shareware game on Monday evening, to hit the news sites Tuesday AM. The game is a minesweeper clone and shareware priced at $5. The app uses no crippling or expiration. I sent a press release email to all of the news related sites that on a list I found on Low End Mac's "Best of the Web" survey. That list is at:

http://www.lowendmac.com/botmw/

Additionally, I went through the steps needed to add an app to versiontracker and to Apple's OS X downloads area. Net results? I've had a little over 1600 downloads of the game between Tuesday and Friday. Top referrers are:

Apple: 673 (this was Wed - Fri, as it takes a little time for a new listing to be posted)
VersionTracker: 255
macnn.com: 233
Stepwise: 104
insidemacgames.com: 101
macgamefiles.com: 94
... and others ...

I was disappointed that two of my fav news sites (Maccentral and Macintouch) did not make mention of the announcement. I have seen Maccentral going this way (to bigger news), but Macintouch seems to list shareware news pretty frequently. I was quite surprised at the traffic from Apple's site (as most people seem to mention VT as the most important place to be) and have to give hats off to Stepwise - a solid response from a pretty specialized site.

Anyway - that's my experience. I received two registrations to date and my wife and I celebrated on the proceeds (trip to Dairy Queen) - I wrote the game for her after she expressed how cool Windows was for having Minesweeper :-) Guess I'd better get cracking on Solitaire...
