How about just treating the database as a document, and using the
regular save as mechanism to handle it, then just open the most recent
document (or make it a preference). People can stick the document in
/Users/Shared or on some network mounted volume if they want to, then,
and the location of the data file will be transparent to the user.
Merging could be as simple as copying and pasting items from one
database to the other.
