IMHO, this developer concern was resolved at this year's WWDC by Scott Forstall of Apple (Session 000).

In the future, it won't matter which path we take since everything we might like to use in Cocoa will be exposed in Carbon and vice versa.

My advice (for what little it's worth) -- pick the environment that helps you develop applications the quickest. My theory is that, in some far flung future world, none of us will be able to tell the difference anyway. ... just a theory. :-)
