I realize that this is not really what you want, but I thought it worthwhile
to point out that there are many, many beginner-level books available on
straight ANSI C which is the base-level knowledge you need (Objective-C is a
superset of C).

Any book that covers ANSI C and doesn't target Windows-specific stuff (e.g.
avoid anything that says "Graphics" or "Game" or "Multimedia" in the title)
would be a good start. E.g, I like the book "C by Dissection" by Kelley and
Pohl since it has lots of examples, but there are many good books.

And then you can fool around with the examples from these books by using
Project Builder and choosing "Standard Tool" as the type of project when you
create a new project. The only trouble is that you might find this a bit
boring, being limited to creating "UNIX style" programs with textual input &
output.
