That would really depend on from where the profit is to be made, I think.
If the idea is to make money directly from sales and support of the
framework, then I'd agree with you - there's not a lot of money to be
made there if it's open-source.
On the other hand, if the idea is to use the framework as a tool to
support other money-making enterprises, then open sourcing it is a good
idea. No one that I know of makes any money from selling copies of
Apache; however, they *do* make money indirectly from Apache. For
example, Apple doesn't charge for Apache, so it isn't producing any
direct income for them. But, customers see it as a useful benefit to
them, which provides Apple with an indirect benefit.
It's basically a matter of focus. Is the framework to be the central
focus of the group, i.e. a "product" in and of itself? Or, will it be
used to help support and/or streamline the development of end products,
with the focus on the end products?
