Hi there ,
After all, if there truly is such a jackass who hits Enter without
thinking, with your approach he'll be positively baffled: "what the heck
happened? Some alert blinked and disappeared, I haven't had a chance to
read what there was written: does it mean the disk is being formatted now
or what?"
Wohoo! Sorry that I have to chime in here but I am _very_ afraid of
this way of thinking!
When I became a Mac user I was taught the principles of the UI. Among
the first things that I learned was:
- Relax and explore! Macs are forgiving machines. If you are lazy you
will never accidentally destroy data.
And that's the reason why OK should never be the default if it will
destroy any data. You see, the user won't have any problem with that
because he _knows_ that whatever it was, it will _not_ harm him in
any way.
(Besides this has saved my "butt" a bunch of times now and I know
just how hard it will be to change this habit)
> The default for "OK to format hard disk" should ALWAYS be cancel.
Not making 'OK' a default button should be enough.
Really, it's frustrating if hitting return cancels what you were going
to do. Even if it is formatting the drive.
Well I have to take some winds out of my own sails here, of course I
noticed this and I do agree that this could be a possible solution.
But I will go and read the HIG some more before I implement something
like this. Its just very important to me that nobody dares to ever
make a default that deletes my work.
*off to file a bug against Mail making delete mailbox a default*
cu Martin
