[OT?] FileMerge

Hello,

I've been trying to use FileMerge (2.0.1) to merge some files... I've read the help, but as far as I can tell FileMerge simply doesn't work. I wonder if anyone else has this problem or it's just me.

No matter what I do, FileMerge always says there is one difference between the files. There is a blue line near the top of the scrollbar indicating that there's a difference near the top of the file, but I can't see any difference there although there are differences lower down. There does not seem to be anything to highlight where the differences are apart from the line in the scrollbar - all the text is in blue. I presume the whole point of FileMerge is to show what the differences between files are, and allow me to choose which version of each difference I prefer... but as far as I can tell FileMerge doesn't even tell me where the differences are. I can try to spot them by scrolling down and seeing where one file scrolls faster than the other, but that's about it. The files are mostly the same but have some differences. I'm not sure how many differences because FileMerge won't tell me, but there definitely are some - it is source code which my friend and I have each modified. I've tried it with and without Ancestor and Merge files. I've had the same lack of success whether I open FileMerge manually or if IB opens it for me.

Has anyone got FileMerge to work? I've tried several times with different files and have yet to get it telling me anything useful. Is this a bug? Am I expecting it to work in entirely a different way from how it actually works? I've read the help, which mentions clicking on a change and then choosing an action from the menu. Unfortunately FileMerge does not highlight any changes (I think perhaps it thinks the entire file is one big change) and clicking anywhere does nothing particularly interesting.

If this is really all there is to FileMerge, can anyone suggest another app I could use to merge files? My only option at present is to email it all to my work PC and use Araxis Merge.
