you are right, i should have said

just because it gives a string to the spell checker and the string
boundaries must be word boundaries in order to have consistent spell
checking.

Finally, rules defining words are hidden in the

1- spell checker
2- NSTextView

and shown in the

3- NSAttributedString, which is of no use here...

At first glance, I miss some logics in it.
