They are not. Check the API: you parse the string yourself.

As an example, accented character are (IMHO quite nonsensically) interpreted as delims with Apple spellchecker. They work perfectly as word parts with my Czech one though (but in OmniWeb, whose spellchecking looks to be bug-ridden).

(OTOH I've never tried to make those real delimiters like slash part of a word: if it does not work for you, there might be a bug there.)
