It does look cool, but is this something that is

maybe only an iApp from Apple?

According to the HIG:

----

Mac OS X version 10.2 provides developers with a new "textured" window appearance (see Figure 5-4). This window style has been designed specifically for use byand is therefore best suited toapplications that provide an interface for a digital peripheral, such as a camera, or an interface for managing data shared with digital peripherals, such as the Address Book application.

This appearance may also be appropriate for applications that strive to re-create a familiar physical devicethe Calculator application, for example. Avoid using the textured window appearance in applications or utilities that are unrelated to digital peripherals or to the data associated with these devices.

(see <http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/macosx/Essentials/ AquaHIGuidelines/AHIGWindows/Textured_Windows.html>)

Is this specific to 10.2, or will it work with
previous version of 10?

It will only work in the new keyed archiving nib format in 10.2. On 10.1, your windows will have the standard Aqua appearance.

We use textured windows in our new app, PodNews, which you can see over at http://www.clichesw.com/podnews, but since some people have complained bitterly we're going to make it a preference in the next version.
