I now have an apparently defective nib file, after having used nibtool to
resave it. I can't be sure this was the source of the problem, however. I
did it and saw the problem with the April DevTools, and it's still there in
July and August DevTools. IB now quits unexpectedly if I try to open the nib
file -- UNLESS I open another nib file first. My application does not crash
because of this, except randomly when opening a new window. Weird. But the
problem could stem from another issue.

How do you "repair" a nib file with Interface Builder? Do you mean just
opening it in IB and doing a Save As?
