Hi Jeremy.
Coming from a Carbon/Toolbox background and being really critical of Apple's
docs, I highly recommend getting the book you mentioned "Carbon Programming"
by K. J. Bricknell, but you don't have to buy it. You can get the full PDF
from the web at
http://www.mactech.com/macintosh-c/. It started life in a
freely available PDF form, then was later printed and made available for
purchase through bookstores.
It's written in the same tone as the original Inside Mac series and has
source code for every section and topic. It's a must have reference for 85%
of the Toolbox functions.
