I'm proud to announce that "Learning Cocoa with Objective-C", published
by O'Reilly and Associates, has started shipping from the printers and
is starting to make its way through the distribution chain. Even
better, there will be a healthy supply at the O'Reilly Mac OS X
Conference coming up September 30th - October 3rd in Santa Clara.
While this is technically the 2nd edition of "Learning Cocoa," it's not
a simple refresh of the old title with a new and longer name. Instead,
it's an almost complete rewrite of the previous book. Over the past 8
months or so, I took the old manuscript down to bare metal and reworked
it into a true "Learning" book. As well, it has been brought current
with Jaguar.
Gone are the long code examples that span multiple chapters. Gone are
the chapters that focus only on a sample application and not on a
particular topic. They've been replaced by examples that are local to
a single chapter and emphasize the topic at hand.
Reworked are the chapters that were once republished content available
as PDFs on your system. The content from these chapters has been
rearranged across the book so that relevant points are discussed where
they fit in the arc of Learning Cocoa, and details that are too
complicated for a Learning book have been removed.
My goal for this book was to be true to the "Learning _____" heritage
of O'Reilly books like "Learning Perl." The target audience for this
book are programmers that are approaching Cocoa for the first time. Or
maybe the second time if they didn't make it through the first time
around. Only time (along with comments from readers) will tell if I've
succeeded in this goal or not, but I'm proud of the work that O'Reilly
has put into this book to help me make it better.
This is a banner season for Cocoa books. I'm actually happy to have
this book shipping alongside "Cocoa Programming" by Scott Anguish, Erik
Buck, and Don Yacktman or "Cocoa Recipes for Mac OS X" by Bill
Cheeseman. I haven't had the pleasure of reading either of these books
yet, but I'm really looking forward to them. It's a good time to be a
Cocoa programmer.
