Installing packages (.pkg) from the command-line?

Hi,

I'm not sure this is right list to ask, but I haven't found one
more appropriate...

Is there a way to install packages (.pkg) in a non-GUI way, e.g.
from the command-line in a terminal? I know that the Apple Soft-
ware Update program must be doing something like this.
