what about in your AppDelegate implementation of -applicationWillFinishLaunching:

That'll get called immediately before the NSApplication object is initialized.

And that fits with the whole delegate, category, subclass rules as far as the choice of operations..

It's actually better to register defaults much earlier than this. For instance, NSDocumentController might decide to read the default value before your NSDocument subclass has been registered and has had a chance to register it. Typically a good place to do it is the +initialize method of the class which looks for the defaults; and usually it's more practical to just collect these in the +initialize method of your NSApplication subclass.
