There is some sort of serious bug in the new nib file format that sometimes causes errors. Apple has officially adviced (on this list, check the archives) that the new format should't be used until they have resolved this problem. Your symptoms is consistent with what you might see in this case. Change the preference, re-save the nib files, and see if it helps. If you look inside the nib file you should *not* see a file called "keyedobjects.nib" if you save in the old format.
