They are. Which leads to fun stuff like not being able to hold down
more than 3 keys at once and have the computer register them.

That depends on the keyboard. It was true on my "Wallstreet" Powerbook G3, but is not true on my TiBook. I can hold down at least 8 keys simultaneously. Check with Key Caps.
