Well, Carbon would let you do the entire thing without the need for extra images, and Carbon allows showing/hiding a view without the need to take it out of the window.

But of course a finished framework that takes care of the entire repositioning etc. is hard to beat. I'm glad to hear that there's a Cocoa alternative, though I really hope Cocoa gets a real disclosure triangle view soon.
