i had tried that and nothing happened. no information, no error. i don't think i'd left it long enough to fail though. it must go much slower under gdb.

Things run at exactly the same speed under GDB (as long as you are just "run"ning them and aren't using e.g. conditional breakpoints). It sounds like you found the problem, anyway.
