Distributed Addressbook entries...

What's the best way to use addressbook entries across multiple machines? Ie: if I want to refer to a given addressbook entry on machine A and machine B by some unique identifier... is the Addressbook Unique ID portable from machine to machine? Or would it be better to just use the person's name and do a search on both machines for the entry? Or would it be better to store the whole vcard in my file for transportation back and forth (ick) Or would I have to force my users to use ldap? (Something I'd rather not do)

???
