Associating file type with icon

  • Subject: Associating file type with icon

How is it possible to associate an icon with a particular file type? Say I write my own Great New Text Editor, and instead of all RTF and TXT files showing an icon representing TextEdit, I want my own Text Editor's icon to show up instead if someone tells Mac OS X to use my app as the default. I tried an example of this once, but then all of the files of a particular type turned into a generic icon. Any ideas?
