Ya, that was just some quick code I wrote out in the email, not really from
a project. I was just using it to illustrate what I mean by the variable
declaration not at the top.

But thanks for the responses, I figured out my mistake. I had forgotten that
the night before I had accidentally wiped my /usr/bin and /usr/local/bin and
in doing this left myself with a strange hybrid of gcc 2 and 3. I
reinstalled the dev tools, and all is good now.
