Right that's absolutely answered it. I realised you needed some C knowledge but was starting to wonder if it was worth following learning C right through as thoroughly as possible (I'm 2/3rds of the way though C Programming by Kernighan and Ritchie, and a few other C things, and was just starting to flag a little). The answer's obviously a resounding yes  more C knowledge the better.

When efficiency is important  use C. That's good to know. Also the portability bit is useful to know and obviously that goes for portability outwards/the other way too.
